I use the "send to smartphone" option a lot, I can say that I've used the direct upload feature once or twice, just to test it out, but it requires connecting to a wireless network, which is cumbersome to do on a camera. You can transfer pictures wirelessly to your phone or tablet, additionally, you can also download a free app to your camera from Sony to transfer direct to Facebook or Flickr.
